These animals are referred to as lower, as in “lower animals.” Lower than humans. Us.
I also inadvertently defined extended family when I dedicated the re-issue of my novel, Cosmic Banditos. Here’s how the dedication page reads:

Cosmic Banditos is a fantasy, of course.
